Happy Fiesta Saint Augustine of Hippo – Patron Saint of Cagayan de Oro

Today, August 28, we come together in joy and unity to celebrate the Feast of the Patron Saint of Cagayan de Oro City, Saint Augustine of Hippo. As we honor his legacy and teachings, let us also take this opportunity to strengthen our bonds as a community.

May this day be filled with festive cheer, love, and gratitude as we reflect on the values of service, compassion, and faith that Saint Augustine exemplified. Let’s continue to support each other, uplift our community, and carry the spirit of this celebration into our daily lives.

Happy Fiesta to Kagay-anons! May Saint Augustine of Hippo guide and bless us all.

Viva San Agustin!

San Augustine Cathedral

The Saint Augustine Cathedral was built in 1624 by Fray Agustin San Pedro who was called El Padre Capitan by the residents here. In 1778, both the church and convent were burned down. From its ruins, Fray Pedro de Santa Barbara, together with generous Cagayanons, built the new church which was inaugurated in 1780. But, it too did not last long as it was gutted in 1831. In 1841, the church was rebuilt using concrete materials. It was adorned with beautiful paintings of the four evangelists. It had a pipe organ. The wooden cross which stands today in the front of the cathedral, was erected in 1888. Archbishop James Hayes, SJ, in 1946 rebuilt the Cathedral and the Convent. It was about this time that the stained glass, given by the New York Sacred Heart chapel, was installed. (PHOTO : by Rhoel Condeza)

MORESCO-1 Joins Nationwide Tree Planting to Celebrate NEAM

MORESCO-1 actively participated in the nationwide tree planting initiative to commemorate the 15th National Electrification Awareness Month (NEAM). The August 23, 2024 event was dedicated to honoring lineworkers, with some participating in the tree planting, clearing activities and others involved in the Task Force LASURECO’s efforts—a CSR-driven activity in Ground Zero, Marawi City.

In a continued commitment to environmental stewardship, MORESCO-1 planted 200 native mangrove seedlings, known as “propagules,” in Barangay Baybay, Alubijid. This effort is part of an ongoing project that began in May 2024, in celebration of MORESCO-1’s 55th founding anniversary. To date, over 700 seedlings have been planted in the MANP, with a goal of nurturing and growing 2,000 native seedlings.

The event saw collaboration with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), whose Protected Area Management Unit (PAMU) Forest Technicians, along with local fisherfolk, were also present. The DENR is employing a geo-tagging system, utilizing GPS and web-based mapping, to monitor and assess the progress of its reforestation projects.
